Stronger Together: Keeping older people safe, informed and connected

Growing older should mean enjoying greater freedom, connection and confidence in our community. Every older person deserves to feel safe, respected and supported. Yet, for many Australians, the risk of elder abuse, financial exploitation and social isolation can make later life more challenging than it should be.

That is why creating opportunities for older people to access information, build connections and understand their rights is so important.

National research estimates that around one in six older Australians experience elder abuse each year. Behind this statistic are people who may be experiencing financial abuse, emotional or psychological harm, neglect or other forms of mistreatment. Often, the abuse occurs behind closed doors and involves someone the older person knows and trusts, making it difficult to recognise, disclose or seek help.

As our lives become increasingly digital, older people can also face growing risks from scams, online fraud and the misuse of personal information. Knowing where to turn for advice and support can make a significant difference.

Locally, we have an opportunity to respond by bringing people together, sharing knowledge and strengthening the connections that help keep our community safe.

On Tuesday, 17 November, the Stronger Together Shepparton Community Forum will bring older community members, service providers and local organisations together at Riverlinks Eastbank.

The free forum, hosted by Victoria Police, Elder Rights Australia, Greater Shepparton City Council, Junction Support Services, Crime Stoppers Victoria, the Department of Government Services with support from Greater Shepparton Foundation, will provide practical information about elder abuse, personal rights, scams and online safety.

It is an opportunity to hear from experts, ask questions and discover the services available to help older people protect themselves and seek support when needed.

Importantly, keeping older people safe is not just about preventing harm. It is also about ensuring they remain connected to their community and can participate in the activities and conversations that matter to them.

Transport, cost and uncertainty about attending an unfamiliar event can sometimes become barriers to participation. That is why the forum is free, light refreshments will be provided, and transport assistance is available for those who need help getting there and home again.

Building a community where older people feel safe and valued is a shared responsibility. It requires families, friends, neighbours, community organisations and services to look out for one another, recognise when something may not be right and know how to respond.

Sometimes, the most important step is simply starting a conversation, checking in on someone or helping them find the right support.

Everyone deserves to age with dignity, independence and confidence. By coming together, we can help make Greater Shepparton a community where older people feel safe, informed, connected and supported.

The Stronger Together Shepparton Community Forum will be held on Tuesday, 17 November 2026, from 10am to 2pm at Riverlinks Eastbank, 70 Welsford Street, Shepparton. Attendance is free, and transport assistance is available.
