Lift Off Education Scholarship Applications Are Now Open

Every year, too many bright young people in our region put their dreams on hold – not because they lack ambition, but because the barriers are simply too high. Financial hardship, family responsibilities, and the rising cost of living can make higher education feel out of reach.

That’s why the Greater Shepparton Foundation’s Lift Off Education Scholarship matters so deeply. Now entering its 11th year, this much-loved and impactful program has already supported 150 locals to take the next step in their education and, ultimately, their careers.

Applications for study in 2026 are now open – and once again, Lift Off is here to ensure that talent, determination, and hard work matter more than postcode or circumstance.

Scholarships range from $2,000 for one year to $10,000 over three years, helping students manage the costs of approved Diploma or Bachelor programs. Applications are also open to those returning to study, to post-graduate students, and even to those who’ve taken a gap year before choosing their path.

The program was first established in 2014, in partnership with the Greater Shepparton Lighthouse Project, after research confirmed what many families already knew: young people in regional Victoria face tougher odds. Non-metropolitan students are twice as likely to defer university as their city peers. Only half finish secondary school, and just a quarter make it to tertiary education. Lift Off was created to change those statistics – and thanks to the support of more than 50 businesses and philanthropic donors, it has raised over $700,000 to date.

This evolution is a story of community strength. What started as a lifeline for school leavers has expanded to support anyone in our region who dares to step back into study, despite the financial and personal challenges. It is a reminder that education is not just the privilege of the few – it should be accessible to all.

Applications close at 5pm on Monday, December 15, 2025, and must be lodged via the ‘Scholarships’ page of this website.

For those whose goals lie outside university study, the Foundation also offers other pathways:

  • The Employment and Vocational Training Scholarship, in partnership with Goulburn Murray LLEN, provides up to $500 towards tools, equipment, travel, or fees for apprenticeships and training.

  • The Regional Youth Journalism Fellowship offers a six-month paid placement in the McPherson Media newsroom, with mentorship from a Melbourne Press Club journalist – a rare opportunity to “earn and learn” in real time.

The Lift Off Education Scholarships, Employment and Vocational Training Scholarships and Regional Youth Journalism Fellowship are more than financial aid. They are a vote of confidence in our young people, a community saying: we believe in you.
